Alexandr Vishnevskii was born August 18, 1955 in Ekaterinburg (ex Sverdlovsk). After obtaining a degree in geography and biology at the University he worked as a geography teacher in a small school in the north of the Sverdlovsk region. His students was very attached to him. At the same time, he developed a passion for exploration of the underworld. In the early '70s he returned to Sverdlovsk and began to explore the Urals with the Speleological Club of Sverdlovsk, of which he became a member in 1974. He then actively contributed to many events organized by various clubs caving throughout' USSR. In 1989 Alexander was one of the founders of the Speleological Association of the Urals (SAU) and its first president. He was a member of the Russian Geographical Society and author of numerous scientific publications. Alexandr has organized and conducted a series of national caving expeditions and training activities in Crimea, Caucasus and Central Asia. He witnessed the most difficult moments for soviet speleology, when the collapse of the Soviet Union has brought radical changes in political and economic life of the country. During this difficult times only his enthusiasm, charisma, talent and its financial support have helped to save the Speleological Club of Sverdlovsk by the dissolution. Alexandr led over ten expeditions on the mountain range Surkhan-Tau, where the cave-Bulok Boi has reached a depth of 1,415 m. In 2007, after a long pause for exploration in Central Asia because of the political situation, Alexandr has been the leading force to resume work in this region. Until his last days he was an active member of the club and the only one who personally knew all the veterans and the younger generations of cavers in the Urals. Was a person not always easy, but certainly extraordinary that has contributed hugely to the development of Russian caving. Alexandr Vishnevskii will always remain in our memory as teacher, friend and true caver.
